Start with the rate, not the balance

A large balance at a low fixed rate and a small balance at a high rate are completely different problems, even though the large one feels more urgent. Debt at a high rate is a guaranteed cost, and paying it down is a guaranteed return of exactly that rate, which is a genuinely attractive risk-free outcome.

Investment returns, by contrast, are uncertain. Comparing a guaranteed rate against an uncertain one is not an apples-to-apples exercise, which is why the honest answer involves your tolerance for uncertainty rather than arithmetic alone.

Check forgiveness eligibility before accelerating

If you may qualify for a forgiveness program, aggressively paying down the balance can actively work against you, because you would be retiring debt that might otherwise be forgiven. This is the single most expensive mistake available in this decision.

Eligibility usually turns on your employer type, your loan type, and your repayment plan. It is worth confirming carefully rather than assuming, and worth confirming again if you change jobs.

Do not skip the free money on the way

Before extra payments go anywhere, capture any employer retirement match. Declining a match to accelerate a loan means giving up part of your compensation to save a smaller amount of interest.

Similarly, an emergency fund earns its keep here. Without one, a surprise expense during an aggressive payoff push tends to land on a credit card at a much worse rate, which undoes the progress and then some.

Why a blend usually wins

Going all-in on either path optimizes for one variable and ignores the others. All-in on payoff can mean a decade of no investing during the years compounding matters most. All-in on investing can leave a high-rate balance grinding away in the background.

Splitting the surplus lets you make progress on both while keeping flexibility, and flexibility has real value when you are early in a career whose income is still moving. The specific split is worth modeling, because it depends on numbers that are yours rather than typical.
